LUMIRing Showcases Innovations at ONDM 2026: Advancing High-Speed Optical Networks for the Future

The LUMIRing project proudly presented its groundbreaking work at the NESTOR workshop titled “Next-Generation High-Speed Optical Networks for Converged Metro–Access in the Age of AI and 6G,” during the 30th International Conference on Optical Network Design and Modelling (ONDM 2026).

This prestigious event took place on Thursday, 14 May, at 8:30 AM at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, Werner-Heisenberg-Weg 39, D-85579 Neubiberg.

Leading the presentation was Prof. Adolfo Cartaxo, the coordinator of the LUMIRing initiative, who shared insights about how LUMIRing serves as a Real-World Multicore Fibre Testbed. During his talk, he emphasized the project’s vital role in facilitating Metro–Access convergence in the context of rapidly evolving technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks.

Prof. Cartaxo stated, “LUMIRing is positioned at the intersection of innovation and practicality, offering a testbed that not only advances research in multicore fiber technology but also supports the needs of the emerging AI and 6G landscapes. Our work aims to drive the future of high-speed optical networks and enhance the way networks converge.”

The NESTOR workshop provided a unique platform for experts across the optical networking field to discuss the latest advancements and challenges in high-speed network design. LUMIRing’s participation highlights the project’s commitment to contributing to essential dialogues surrounding converged metro-access networks and their role in the age of AI and 6G.

The workshop facilitated dynamic discussions and networking opportunities, positioning LUMIRing alongside key industry stakeholders and thought leaders driving innovation in telecommunications.

As a leading-edge testbed for multicore fiber technology, LUMIRing continues to engage with international partners, build collaborations, and pave the way for future breakthroughs that meet the demands of the next generation of optical networks.
